Not Guilty Verdict for Internal Medicine Physician

In what is likely to be the last verdict in Cook County for a while, Pretzel & Stouffer partners Brian Sundheim and Kelly Kono obtained a not guilty verdict on March 17 on behalf of an internal medicine physician.

The case involved the alleged failure to diagnose transient ischemic attacks prior to the patient suffering a stroke resulting in right-sided paralysis and an inability to speak. Plaintiff’s counsel asked for $3.5M in closing argument. The jury deliberated for approximately an hour and fifteen minutes, including lunch, before returning the verdict.
