Biography:
As both a trial lawyer and as appellate counsel, Matthew Egan has substantial experience in complex civil litigation. He has tried numerous cases to verdict in state and federal courts and has briefed and argued dozens of cases before courts of review in Illinois, including the Illinois Supreme Court. His recent trial work includes securing the largest verdict in the history of the Circuit Court of Cook County. He is a recipient of the AV (highest) rating from Martindale-Hubbell, and in 2004, was elected as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has also been recognized by his peers as an Illinois Super Lawyer annually since 2006. Mr. Egan is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the Illinois Supreme Court, the Trial Bar of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Indiana. His representation of clients focuses on the areas of personal injury, product liability, employment discrimination, and professional liability defense, including medical malpractice. Mr. Egan began his legal career with the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office, working as an Assistant States Attorney and a Special Assistant State’s Attorney in the criminal appeals division. After leaving the State’s Attorney’s Office, he worked in the Chicago Legal Counsel’s office of Hartford Insurance Company. He joined Pretzel & Stouffer as an associate in the fall of 1988 and was elected a partner in 1991. He has served on the firm’s executive, finance, compensation and ethics committees. Mr. Egan has also been active in non-compensated legal activities. He served as a member of the Inquiry Board of the Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission of the Illinois Supreme Court from 1989 to 1991. Since then, Mr. Egan has served continuously as a member of the Hearing Board of the Attorney Registration & Disciplinary Commission. He has also drafted legislation and testified before committees of the Illinois Senate and House of Representatives concerning legislation applicable to claims against insurance producers and firms.
